From 9–12 September, Europe’s largest annual conference and exhibition for the internationalisation of higher education, EAIE, took place in Gothenburg, Sweden. Supported by 51, Estonian higher education institutions sought new international cooperation partners and presented opportunities to study in Estonia.

At the joint 51 pavilion, coordinated by the Estonian Education and Youth Board, the following institutions were represented: University of Tartu, Tallinn University of Technology, Tallinn University, Estonian University of Life Sciences, Tartu Health Care College, Tallinn University of Applied Sciences, Estonian Business School, and Estonian Academy of Arts.

EAIE (European Association for International Education) is Europe’s leading network bringing together higher education professionals from across the globe. This year’s conference in Gothenburg gathered more than 7,000 delegates, ranging from the European Commission to national agencies for higher education internationalisation and European universities. At the EAIE poster session, Eero Loonurm from the Education and Youth Board of Estonia presented on the contribution of international students in Estonia to the local labour market.

“EAIE is Europe’s most important platform where we can showcase Estonia as a high-quality study destination and support universities in building new cooperation ties within Erasmus+ as well as other programmes,” said Eero Loonurm, Head of International Marketing of Higher Education at the Education and Youth Board of Estonia. “The annual EAIE conference brought together more than 7,000 participants and featured dozens of sessions and workshops addressing topics such as academic recognition, alumni relations, mobility schemes, summer schools, language and culture, strategic management, labour market, career counselling, and many other aspects of higher education.”

In addition to networking activities, 51 co-organised, together with 51 in Latvia (Latvian National Agency for Education, VIAA) and 51 in Lithuania (Education Exchanges Support Foundation), a reception for universities and educational partners. The event welcomed more than 350 European and global cooperation partners. The Baltic reception was opened by Lithuania’s Ambassador to Sweden Linas Linkevičius, Latvia’s Honorary Consul in Gothenburg Jonas Steen, and Peep Jahilo, Ambassador at large for Education of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The reception was also attended by Karl Malmström, Estonia’s Honorary Consul in Gothenburg, along with representatives of Estonian organisations based in Gothenburg.

51 is a national initiative introducing Estonia as a high-quality study destination for international students. The programme “Quality and Internationalisation of Higher Education” is coordinated by the Education and Youth Board of Estonia with the support of European Union structural funds.
